The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently published national HIV incidence (new infections) that showed much higher numbers that previous estimates. The time is now. Together, we can prevent the spread of this pandemic – through awareness, care, prevention, education and research.

On December 1st, individuals and organizations will recognize World AIDS Day. This year’s theme is leadership – from all sectors, including government, but also leaders among individuals and families, communities, non-profits and other organizations. The question is not should you participate, but how can you? Both NIDA and AIDS.gov recognize the leadership of Bloggers Unite and invite bloggers to join them in their mission to prevent and stop the spread of HIV/AIDS.

Borneo is the third largest island in the world, bordered by the South China, Sulu, Celebes, and Java Seas. Nearly three-quarters of the island is taken up by the Indonesian provinces of East, West, Central, and South Kalimantan. The vast majority of the remainder of Borneo is occupied by the Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak, with Brunei making up less than one percent.

The island features spectacular rain forests that are home to more than 15,000 known species of plants and animals, such as orangutans, flying squirrels, pygmy elephants, and hornbills. But Borneo's biodiversity faces an increasingly uncertain future as the natural resources that have long brought people to the island—timber, oil, natural gas, coal, gold, spices, and rubber—are harvested and exported to satisfy growing global demand.

Only half of Borneo remains forested, due to extensive logging that accelerated in the 1970s and the more recent spread of commercial crops such as oil palm. Fires have also contributed substantially to forest loss. Set to clear land for agriculture, they have often spiraled out of control and burned neighboring forests. Tropical rain forests usually can resist fire because of their high moisture content. However, in recent decades Southeast Asia has frequently had El Niño years, which have brought droughts to the region. Soils in logged forests are also drier because they're more exposed to sun and wind, and logging often leaves behind highly flammable tree litter. All of which has led to major fires that have claimed millions of acres of forest and other land cover during drought years (1982-83, 1991, 1994, 1997-98, 2002, 2006). The largest of these fires occurred in 1997-98, when 16 million acres burned in Indonesian Borneo alone, roughly half of which was forested area.

Removing forests not only puts flora and fauna at risk by reducing their habitat, but also contributes to long-term environmental problems such as climate change. Indonesia is the third largest carbon emitter in the world,. behind China and the United States, but its emissions, unlike those of these industrial giants, are mainly the result of land-use change and deforestation.

The future of Borneo's forests will depend on how the concerns of a wide array of stakeholders with often competing interests are addressed. Consumers in importing countries who seek exotic hardwood furniture, plywood, and palm oil (used in cosmetics, food, detergents, et cetera) put pressure on the forests. Timber and oil palm companies clear forests to supply these products. Small farmers compete with large companies for access to land. Conservationists push to leave large swaths of land untouched or to limit how they're used, hoping to protect Borneo's flora and fauna as well as its water and air quality. Since prime land is valuable and finite, access is restricted, and government at all levels, including the police and the military, is involved in providing that access (by issuing permits, enforcing permit boundaries and regulations on resource extraction, granting tax breaks and other financial incentives). Corruption and illegal logging happen because demand outweighs the legally available supply of timber products. Any program that seeks to remedy the devastating forest loss in Borneo needs to look for ways to sustain the environment while still allowing people, companies, and governments to make money and provide the world with resources.

Local, national, and international parties working to preserve Borneo's natural resources understand and are aware of the urgency and complexity of the situation. Good governance is a necessary first step, though it doesn't come easily, requiring commitments to transparency, public accountability, participatory processes, and dealing in good faith, along with an ongoing fight against corruption.. One program that may help change deforestation rates and carbon emissions as well as lead to better governance is known as REDD (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation). It's a program of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the parent treaty of the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, which seeks to stabilize global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Under REDD, countries that reduce their GHG emissions through improved forest protection, and sustainable-production plans would be eligible to receive benefits: Essentially, countries could earn money for preserving their forests instead of cutting them down.

Other programs focus on the unique problems faced by an island owned by three countries. Forestry and land-use law and practices vary from country to country. Logging and mining restrictions can often be sidestepped by crossing a border. Many conservationists have called for transnational management of the island's natural resources, especially since forests and creatures like monkeys and elephants don't adhere to human-delineated borders. One such project is the WWF's Heart of Borneo conservation plan, which has persuaded the governments of Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei to help preserve 85,000 square miles of connected forested areas on Borneo.

Michael Jackson was famous for his socially-conscious music, but "Earth Song," his big, bold environmental call-to-arms, is often overlooked. Still, by sheer dint of his reach, the song might have made Jackson (who bears no relation to U.S. EPA chief Lisa Jackson) a kind of super-sized Al Gore, a decade before An Inconvenient Truth.

"Earth Song" is indisputably the most popular green-themed tune ever. It remains Jackson's best-selling song in the U.K. (yes, bigger than "Thriller" or "Billie Jean"), and beat out the Beatles' first single in 25 years for the top spot on the British charts. But the song, and its lavish globe-trotting video, barely registered in the U.S.

Record executives at Epic apparently didn't think it had much life in the U.S. Perhaps the themes of ecological destruction weren't suited to pop radio in the U.S. market, or the song's musical approach -- gospel, blues and opera -- was considered too offbeat for American audiences.

Whatever the reason, the song was never released as a single in Jackson's home country. And the dramatic music video -- shot in four different places and depicting man-made ecological devastation and renewal -- was only rarely played on American MTV.

Update: Jackson performed "Earth Song" at the 1996 World Music Awards in France, backed up by a choir of young children and cheered on by a crowd of crying fans.

The Whole Earth Catalog -- Except Global Warming

With its themes of drought, over-fishing, deforestation, pollution and war, the song and video speaks as loudly today as it did in 1996. And its image of smog being sucked back into a smokestack foreshadows the ambitious hopes of clean coal proponents.

Notably absent however was what has become the most talked-about environmental issue: climate change.

At the time, climate change was still a relative seedling of an ecological crisis to many (and the science of greenhouse gases doesn't lend itself easily to the pop form). Still, heard by millions, "Earth Song" was pop music's biggest environmental song, and probably the first ecological eye-opener for millions of young fans. The message was clear: we are the world indeed, and we need to take care of it accordingly.

In the epic music video, scenes of environmental destruction and war are cut with Jackson wandering across a landscape of drought and fire, before he does his yell-through-the-wind thing, undoing all of our ecological damage like magic.

It was named by MTV one of the top 40 most expensive music videos, and was also likely one of the most carbon-heavy, too: locations included the Amazon rainforest, Croatia, Tanzania, and Warwick, New York, where a safe forest fire was simulated in a corn field.

Since it was filmed, more than 38,600 square miles have been cleared for pasture in the Amazon, where deforested land now equals the size of Iceland.

Here's what Jackson said of the song:

I remember writing Earth Song when I was in Austria, in a hotel. And I was feeling so much pain and so much suffering of the plight of the Planet Earth. And for me, this is Earth's Song, because I think nature is trying so hard to compensate for man's mismanagement of the Earth. And with the ecological unbalance going on, and a lot of the problems in the environment, I think earth feels the pain, and she has wounds, and it's about some of the joys of the planet as well. But this is my chance to pretty much let people hear the voice of the planet.

R.I.P. Michael. Long Live Climate Action?
A day after the King of Pop's death, the U.S. House is readying to pass historic but weakened legislation on climate change. But it's hard not to wonder whether the Waxman-Markey bill mark the birth of a new global "We Are the World" moment to be advanced at talks in Copenhagen, or leave us stuck in the political mud.

Rather, will it be a step forward, or just more moonwalk?

In another of his famous socially-conscious songs, Jackson had some good advice for Washington politicians, and everyone really:

I'm starting with the man in the mirror
If you wanna make the world a better place
Take a look at yourself and

I watch and hear Michael Jackson's song for the first time at age 7 years old. My mother played that song from local radio. If i didn't wrong, that song is "Black or White." At that age, I still didn't understand abiut the meaning of song. But I admire jacko's performace. He's only the man who born 50 year with had wonderful gift.

I can't express my emotion when I heard his dead. But as a Christiant, I pray for Michael, his family, and a lot of fans who inspired by his music. Thank you Jacko and farewell.

Green Your House with LED Light Bulbs

If you've gone green, then you probably have those curly-cue compact florescent light bulbs hanging from your fixtures. That's wonderful. But what if I told you that there was a new bulb in town that may one day tell CFLs, "C U L8R?"
The new bulb on the block is the LED bulb, and the advantages of LED bulbs are truly staggering. First off, a 1.3-watt LED bulb uses less electricity than both the 60-watt incandescent and the 9-watt CFL bulb. Secondly, LED bulbs last for a long time. How long? Let's just say that you could get married, have a child and go to his or her college graduation without ever changing bulbs. Some bulbs can last up to 100,000 hours, and they are clean. LED light bulbs don't contain mercury like CFL bulbs.
While compact fluorescent bulbs are currently the most popular option for more energy efficient lighting, LED lighting is already hitting the market. LEDs are even more efficient than CFLs but come at a higher price point, costing as much as $100 a bulb. And while the LEDs will take 5 to 7 years to pay for themselves, the original bulbs are likely to last well past that.
There are only two major drawbacks to the LED bulbs. They aren't that bright. You can find bulbs that produce light that's equivalent to a 50 or 60-watt incandescent bulb, but that's about it. They are also quite expensive. An LED bulb will cost you at least $80 dollars. Seems expensive, but LEDs will save you money in the long run. Imagine two decades of not buying light bulbs.
LEDs aren't mainstream yet, but if they can perform as well as advertised, they'll certainly be the bulb of choice for the future, and the future looks bright.

This Wednesday - April 22nd, Earth Day - Greenpeace are releasing our long awaited (here at GPI) Inspiring Action video - and the end result was definitely worth the wait. I won't say too much more, and will just let you watch it for yourselves:

This release is part of a recruitment drive to get 3 million more people signed up with Greenpeace as climate activists and taking action in an extremely important year for our climate - at the end of which will be the most important conference this century, the UN Climate Conference in Copenhagen, where deals will be struck that will determine our planet's environmental future.

Greenpeace are going to be promoting this video all day on Earth Day - through Facebook (our page has over 220,000 fans) and Twitter (over 4,400 followers) and elsewhere. KAMPOENG is a blog wich support Greenpeace action. We want to promote to the world that WORLD IS DYING! We must stop our habit, our lifestyle, and our goal with real act. We, human, are the living creature who ruin the circle of balance at nature.

World’s First Wind & Solar Powered Antarctic Research Station Officially Opened

In Antarctica on Sunday the world’s first “zero emission research station” was officially opened: The Princess Elisabeth Antarctica. Commissioned in 2004 by the Belgian government, the Princess Elisabeth Antarctica (sounds like a hotel, doesn’t it?) will allow 20 scientists to carry out research on climate change, and, apart from getting down there, not contribute to it while doing that research:

The whole base is powered through renewable energy sources: Eight small-scale wind turbines, as well as solar panels provide all the electricity; solar thermal technology melts snow to provide water. Currently, this is the only polar research station entirely powered through renewable energy, most bases being powered by diesel generators. So the researchers can say goodbye for solar now while they try to save antartica from galobal warming effect.

To operate Princess Elisabeth on renewable energy required a lot of planning and built-in redundancy of systems. The station itself is aiming for zero emissions, will have on-site wind turbines, many solar panels (though with the large amount of solar rays that hit the station, cooling becomes as important as heating) two bioreactors and two filtration units. There is also an emergency diesel generator back-up and outside the station's buildings researchers are reliant on some diesel for snow mobiles and snow movers (they hope to eventually run these with a fuel cell). World Health Day is celebrated every year on 7 April, under the sponsorship of the World Health Organization (WHO). So this event less than a week to celebrate and make some act. The only treasure of human is just health of their body. But just don't think yourself health, but think about the condition of health of anybody. In 1948, the World Health Organization held the First World Health Assembly. The Assembly decided to celebrate 7th April of each year, with effect from 1950, as the World Health Day. The World Health Day is celebrated to create “awareness of a specific health theme to highlight a priority area of concern for the World Health Organization (WHO)”. World Health Day 2009 focuses on the safety of health facilities and the readiness of health workers who treat those affected by emergencies. Health centres and staff are critical life-lines for vulnerable people in disasters - treating injuries, preventing illnesses and caring for people's health needs.

They are cornerstones for primary health care in communities – meeting everyday needs, such as safe childbirth services, immunizations and chronic disease care that must continue in emergencies. Often, already fragile health systems are unable to keep functioning through a disaster, with immediate and future public health consequences.

World Autism Awareness Day

One in every 150 child is diagnosed with autism and every 20 minutes there is a child diagnosed with autism. At the moment Autism is on the top 3 of the 10 developmental disorders.

On December 18, 2007, the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution 62/139, tabled by the State of Qatar, which declares April 2 as World Autism Awareness Day (WAAD) in perpetuity. Her Highness Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Al-Missned, Consort of His Highness Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani, the Emir of the State of Qatar, supported the campaign for a World Autism Awareness Day through the current 62nd UN General Assembly Session, garnering consensus support from all United Nations Member States.

The United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon welcomed the UN World Autism Awareness Day last year. Mr.Ban ki-moon said: 'As we advance the universal human rights of children with disabilities, let us focus on building enabling environments for them to prosper as future members of their communities, citizens of their countries and as fully-fledged members of the global community. Let us pay tribute to the courage of children with autism and their families, as they strive every day to confront the disability with a powerful combination of determination, creativity and hope. Let us empower them and respond to their needs today, so as to make our societies more accessible, enabling and empowering for all our children tomorrow.

This UN resolution is one of only three official disease-specific United Nations Days and will bring the world's attention to autism, a pervasive disorder that affects tens of millions. The World Autism Awareness Day resolution encourages all Member States to take measures to raise awareness about autism throughout society and to encourage early diagnosis and early intervention. It further expresses deep concern at the prevalence and high rate of autism in children in all regions of the world and the consequent developmental challenges.

1 billion people worldwide will turn off their lights for one hour, from 20.00-21.00, for Earth Hour 2009.

On 28 March 2009 the movement is hoping that a total of 1 billion people worldwide will turn off their lights for one hour, from 20.00 to 21.00 (SA time), for Earth Hour 2009, a global event using mass action to campaign against global warming and climate change.

Earth Hour is not about saving electricity. According to the official website,
“it’s much broader than that – it is a symbolic action to show governments that the people of the world want an effective global climate deal at the end of 2009.”

Earth Hour is an annual international event created by the WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature/World Wildlife Fund), held on the last Saturday of March, that asks households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights and electrical appliances for one hour to raise awareness towards the need to take action on climate change. It was pioneered by WWF Australia and the Sydney Morning Herald in 2007, and achieved worldwide participation in 2008.

With 35 countries around the world participating as official flagship cities and over 400 cities also supporting, Earth Hour 2008 was a major success, celebrated on all seven continents. Iconic landmarks all around the world turned off their non-essential lighting for Earth Hour which included the Empire State Building (New York City), Sears Tower (Chicago), Golden Gate Bridge (San Francisco), Bank of America Plaza (Atlanta), Sydney Opera House (Sydney, Australia), Wat Arun Buddhist Temple (Bangkok, Thailand), the Colosseum (Rome, Italy), Royal Castle (Stockholm, Sweden), London's City Hall (England), Space Needle (Seattle), the CN Tower (Toronto, Canada) and SM Mall of Asia & The Giant Globe (Manila, Philippines).

According to WWF Thailand, Bangkok decreased electricity usage by 73.34 megawatts, which, over one hour, is equivalent to 41.6 tonnes of carbon dioxide. The Bangkok Post gave different figures of 165 megawatt-hours and 102 tonnes of carbon dioxide. This was noted to be significantly less than a similar campaign initiated by Bangkok's City Hall the previous year in May where 530 megawatt-hours were saved and 143 tonnes of carbon dioxide emission was cut.
Toronto saved 900 megawatt-hours of electricity. 8.7% was saved if measured against a typical March Saturday night.
Ireland, as a whole, had a reduction in electricity use of about 1.5% for the evening. In the three-hour period between 18:30 and 21:30, there was a reduction of 50 megawatts, saving 150 megawatt-hours, or approximately 6 tonnes of carbon dioxide.
In Dubai, where external lighting on several major city landmarks was turned off and street lighting in selected areas was dimmed by 50%, the Electricity and Water Authority reported savings of 100 megawatt-hours of electricity. This represented a 2.4% reduction in demand compared to before the hour began.
The best result was from Christchurch, New Zealand. The city reported a drop of 13% in electricity demand. However, Transpower reported that New Zealand's power consumption during Earth Hour was 335 megawatts, higher than the 328 megawatt average of the previous two Saturdays. Melbourne, Australia saved 10.1% of electricity. Sydney, being the city that participated both 2007 and 2008 Earth Hour, cut 8.4% electricity consumption. This is less than last year's 10.2%, however Earth Hour executive director Andy Ridley made the claim that after factoring margin of error, the participation in this city is the same as last year.
The worst result was from Calgary, Canada. The city's power consumption actually went up 3.6% at the hour's peak electricity demand. In Calgary, however, where weather plays a large role in power consumption, the city experienced weather 12°C colder than the previous Saturday's recorded temperature. Earth Hour has also received free publicity from the Google corporation. From 12:00 a.m. on March 29, 2008 until the end of Earth Hour, the Google homepage in the United States, Colombia, Canada, Denmark, Ireland and the UK was turned to a black background. Their tagline is, "We've turned the lights out. Now it's your turn - Earth Hour."

In 2050, Renewable Will Be The Major Energy Supply

US would generate 100% of its electricity from renewable sources within the next 10 years. A more sober projection was made at the Copenhagen Climate Congress by Professor Peter Lund of the Helsinki University of Technology. In his presentation "Global market penetration of new renewable energy technologies: assessing future growth rates and energy impacts", Lund said with the proper financial and political support, by 2050 renewable energy could supply 40% of the world's electricity supply. Of that 15% would be from solar power and 25% from wind power (20% of that from offshore wind farms).

To get there though, "by 2030...renewables need to be the mainstream technologies. About 80% of (new) electricity has to come from new renewables." However, with proper support in the shorter term, renewable energy technology could be marginalized and amount to as little as 15% of the global electricity supply.

For support the plan of future energy plan, Greenpeace is calling for an Energy (R)evolution. Put together in collaboration with the European Renewable Energy Council , the report outlines a way in which carbon emissions will peak by 2015 and decline thereafter, with emissions being 50% below 1990 levels by 2050, thereby keeping global temperature rise below 2°C. These are the steps that would need to be taken:

Phase out all subsidies for fossil fuels and nuclear energy
The phasing out of fossil fuel subsidies is sure to sit well with anyone with even a tinge of green in their thinking. Nuclear energy though has more supporters, but Greenpeace explains their nuclear energy position like this:
Although nuclear power produces little carbon dioxide, there are multiple threats to people and the environment from its operations. These include the risks and environmental damage from uranium mining, processing and transport, the risk of nuclear weapons proliferation, the unsolved problem of nuclear waste and the potential hazard of serious accident. The solution to our future energy needs lies instead in greater use of renewable energy sources for both heat and power.
Internalize the external (social and environmental) costs of energy production through ‘cap and trade’ emissions trading
Though we may quibble about whether cap and trade or a carbon tax would be the better thing to do—and we’ll side with Jeffrey Sachs in saying that a carbon tax is probably the better route, though the two options aren’t mutually exclusive—this is something that should be applied to far more than simply energy production. The environmental externalities of all economic activity need to be internalized if we are to get any sort of handle on the conjoined problems of energy use increasing, global warming, population growth and natural resource depletion.
Mandate strict efficiency standards for all energy consuming appliances, buildings and vehicles
Are the only people not advocating higher fuel efficiency standards car manufacturers themselves?
Establish legally binding targets for renewable energy and combined heat and power generation
How these would be enforced should be carefully considered—if penalties are levied that decrease the ability of a utility to invest in renewable energy, when they’ve already failed to meet targets that might be counterproductive—but this is crucial.
Reform the electricity markets by guaranteeing priority access to the grid for renewable power generation
Very important, but also important is ensuring that the transmission capacity exists to move electricity from areas where it is most easily generated to where it is most needed.
Provide defined and stable returns for investors, for example by feed-in tariff programs
We should have a national feed-in tariff program in the United States. Forget piecemeal net metering, feed-in tariff and other programs. It’s been shown on numerous occasions that feed-in tariffs are less expensive to administer and provide greater levels of market stability than do other renewable energy promotion schemes. In Germany its been shown that an effective feed-in tariff program spurs renewable energy deployment, with the costs being minimal on the consumer (in the range of $3 more per month for an average family).
Implement better labeling and disclosure mechanisms to provide more environmental product information
While most of the time we think of product labeling and consumer goods, it could also be applied to energy use. How about your electric bill containing a chart that shows exactly what source was used to generate your electricity and what sort of carbon emissions that created. Something easy to read, graphic. Cigarettes have warning labels, perhaps your electricity bill should as well.
Increase research and development budgets for renewable energy and energy efficiency
In times of economic hardship this may be easier said than done, but it must be done nonetheless. The costs of not doing so are too high. Remember that Nicolas Stern said back in 2006 that failing to act on climate change could cause economic hardship not seen since the Great Depression, with reductions in GDP in the range of 5-20%. You think the current round of financial turmoil is bad? Just wait until unchecked climate change and peak oil come at us.

International World Water Day is held annually on 22 March as a means of focusing attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources.

An international day to celebrate freshwater was recommended at the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED). The United Nations General Assembly responded by designating 22 March 1993 as the first World Water Day.

The UN invited its member nations to devote this day to implementing UN recommendations and promoting concrete activities within their countries. Each year, one of various UN agencies involved in water issues takes the lead in promoting and coordinating international activities for World Day for Water.

With the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs coordinating, World Day for Water 2005 also marked the start of the second 'UN International Decade for Action for Water', also referred to as the Water for Life Decade 2005-2015.

In 2006, World Day for Water was coordinated by UNESCO with the theme: 'Water and Culture'.

In 2007, the theme is 'Coping with Water Scarcity', coordinated by FAO.

In addition to the UN member states, a number of NGOs promoting clean water and sustainable aquatic habitats have used World Day for Water as a time to focus public attention on the critical water issues of our era.

In pre-colonial Dutch East India period, Benteng Ujung Pandang or the Fortress of Ujung Pandang, was a showcase of the great Gowa kingdom of South Sulawesi whose success and prosperity was borne from the famous as seafaring Bugis tribes. It was built by the King of Gowa in 1545 and was just one of about 17 defensive fortresses along the coastline of Makassar. First made of clay, it was later completed in stone in the 1600s.

The fort was no match though to the gunships of the Dutch and it fell to the hands of the invaders. While all the other 16 fortresses were destroyed, Benteng UPandang was taken over and reconstructed after the treaty of Bungaya in 1667. Serving as a safe gateway to Maluku (Moluccas), the fabled spice islands, the Benteng was built in the shape of a turtle going down to sea, hence the local term panyua. The five-meter walls of the fort were of natural black stone and were designed to repulse attack.

During the 17th and 18th century, the fort was a walled city, with numerous buildings that serve the military, political, economic and even religious functions. There was the governor’s residence, the military officers’ quarters, government offices, the armory, the library, the warehouses, the garrison and at the center, a Protestant church. The fort has five bastions in every corner of the wall.

Colonial Dutch architecture is basically simple, almost severe. Exterior walls, though thick, are unadorned. Windows, sparsely distributed around the buildings, are few. Most buildings have louvre windows with open slats that can admit air – obviously a concession to the hot climate of the island- but some are also solidly constructed vertical panels fit for a garrison.

The colonial-era Dutch buildings inside are remarkably well-preserved. Some are given new life as a public museum and as a center for culture and arts. On occasion, spaces can be used for music and theatre performance rehearsals. From a distance, the buildings inside the fort look quite robust and solid, transporting you to a different place in time. Despite the modern usage and the refurbishments, the fort remains a solid remembrance of an aggressive military past.

In 2005 the Indonesian Government showed a new map of Australia to the former Prime Minister of Austraia and asked for half of Australia. Do not be surprise if Barak Obama starts firing missiles on Australian cities using U.S. spy planes. Barak Obama even knows how to speak Indonesian. It is time to rise up and force the USA to close down their 31 USA bases here in Australia and kick their ass all the way to Indonesia and the USA. The USA President Barak Obama is an Indonesian wolf on sheep skin.

Be careful about Indonesia, you may get eaten there, literally. No, no, Obama must not show off his Indonesian background. There are people there, in Jakarta, who are too happy to blow up anything American. There are the scamers, smooth talking, who are ready to strike any American within striking distance.
In Malaysia, we simply shoot Indonesians, because we simply know then as criminals. They break homes, rob people, and rape women. The police catch them, alright, but the courts let them free on bail. Then they would disappear by running across the border. They would come back after a while a repeat same crimes again.
We get tired of them, that is why we shoot them. Next time Obama show off his Indonesian roots, we cringe.

Erm... from what I could hear, it sounded like all he said was 'thank you' and 'how are you' in Indonesian. No more than you' d expect from an average tourist. But it's gratifying nonetheless that he made the effort. It's more than a lot of other Americans, including Bush, would have done.

Indonesia. The country where Obama was live and gets education like normal people. So it's not confused if Obama still can speak Indonesian languange until now. Barack Obama put on a bilingual display today while visiting the State Department. Obama, who lived in Indonesia from 1967 to 1971, until the age of ten, broke into Indonesian after being greeted by a State Dept,  named Charles Silver, knowing the President once lived in Indonesia, shouted out, "good afternoon" in the local language.

The Gadjah Mada University (Indonesian: Universitas Gadjah Mada or UGM) is the largest university in Indonesia in terms of student population.^[1] It is also one of the oldest universities in the country, founded on December 19, 1949; although the first lecture was given on 13 March 1946. The name was taken from the name of Majapahit's Prime Minister, Gajah Mada.

UGM is also the oldest and largest university in Indonesia. It was founded in 1949 and currently has 18 faculties, 71 undergraduate study programs, 28 diploma study programmes and Graduate Schools including 62 study programmes. The total student population is around 55000, and the number of lecturers is 2266.

When founded, UGM had 6 faculties: the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmacy, the Faculty of Law, Social and Political Sciences, the Faculty of Engineering, the Faculty of Letters, Pedagogy, and Philosophy, the Faculty of Agriculture, and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.From 1952 until 1972 the Faculty of Medicine was split into two separate faculties, the Surabaya branch of the Faculty of Law, Social, and Political Sciences was established, and the Faculty of Education and Teacher Training was integrated into IKIP Yogyakarta.During its initial years, the University used the buildings and other facilities belonging to the Kraton of Yogyakarta (sultan Sultan Hamengkubuwono IX's palace). The university gradually established a campus of its own in Bulaksumur. The university is now has an area of 3 square kilometres.

In 2007, UGM ranked number 360 on Times Higher Education Supplement World University Rankings 2007, the highest rank for university in Indonesia.Webometrics Ranking of World Universities July 2007 placed UGM on rank 939 in the world, and rank 95 in Asia.

I guess I missed any information to share for KAMPOENG. I really sorry because until this day, I always busy with my duty as college student. For your knowledge, I still study at Gadjah Mada University at Jogjakarta. Gadjah Mada University (GMU) is maybe the top of university at Indonesia but at Asia, GMU's rank always on the lowest rank. The quality of education at Indonesia still questionable. Are we ready to set at global challenge. For now, just can say no. With my humble opinion, Indonesia need study more from progressive country, especcially at Asia, like Singapore, Vietnam, China, India, even Iran.

It's my dream to make our country, Indonesia step froward but never left behind traditional and nature value. Such as, the self-reliable people, more conservation of forest, and spread out the diversity of culture of Indonesia's people. And that's will be KAMPOENG's vision and mission. In additional news, I personally shocked with many of visitor of KAMPOENG blog. That's mean world always care with small act with big dream. Thank you for all your support and concern.

Asian Beach Games 2008, Bali, INDONESIA

One, will be major element of this event, One Asia, One Spirit, One Unity. It's time for 1stASIAN BEACH GAMES 2008! The purpose of 2008 Summer Olympic is impressed the world with spectacular of China's power. And it's work. But, for Indonesia, the purpose of 2008 Asian Beach Games is to share our nature, our hospitality, and our Bali to entire world people.

Bali, an island with exotic panorama and mistic culture, ready to make history for the first time major event of beach games at Asia. From October 18th to 26th, this event held by Balinese Government, Balinese People, Minister of Culture and Tourism of Indonesia, National Olympic Committee of Indonesia, and Olympic Council of Asia. The opening ceremony has been held in monumental park Garuda Wisnu Kencana in Nusa Dua, Badung. There was no bidding process for Bali to host the inaugural edition of the Asian Beach Games. Although there were six other country that show their interest to host the games, Bali was chosen by acclamation to host the games. It will be the second time for Indonesia to host an Asia level multi-sports event, after Jakarta held the 1962 Asian Games.

The Bali Asian Beach Games Torch Relay started on October 8, 2008 at Mrapen, Grobogan, Central Java which is famous for it's eternal flame. The flame was lit with the aid of natural gas. From Mrapen, the torch was carried to Semarang. In the capital city of Central Java, the torch was carried to the Governor Office by Indonesia's famous sprinter, Suryo Agung Wibowo.

On October 9, 2008, the torch arrived in Jakarta. On the next day, the torch has been paraded from the City Hall to Indonesia's Minister of Youth and Sport Office, and finally arrived at the Istana Merdeka to be given to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. On October 10, 2008, the torch headed to Bali for a 9 day inland tour accross 10 regions (1 city and 9 regencies). More than 500 people(45 per district) were involved in the Torch Relay as torchbearer. They came from the sports world: athletes (local, national, and international), coaches, and officials. Besides that, more than 2,000 people participated in the parade. The journey was a showcase of Indonesian culture, especially Balinese traditional art, dance, and music to international audiences.

September 2008: Six Greenpeace UK volunteers are acquitted of criminal damage by a Crown Court jury in a case that centred on the contribution made to climate change by burning coal. The charges arose after the six attempted to shut down the Kingsnorth coal-fired power station in Kent in 2007 by scaling the chimney and painting the Prime Minister's name down the side. The defendants pleaded 'not guilty' and relied in court on the defence of 'lawful excuse' - claiming they shut the power station in order to defend property of a greater value from the global impact of climate change. The landmark case marks the first victory of the 'lawful excuse' defense in a climate-change case in Britain.

December 2007: The World Bank's private lending arm, the International Finance Corporation (IFC) decides to sell its equity stake in Olam International Limited. Olam's involvement in illegal timber trade was first detailed in our Carving up the Congo report published earlier this year. The report illustrated how Olam was holding forest land in the Congo granted in breach of a moratorium on the granting of new logging titles, which the World Bank itself had helped to establish. It also described how Olam was sourcing timber from destructive and illegal operations through de-facto subcontracting agreements with third-party suppliers involved in illegal logging.

December 2007: The Irish Government announces what will be the EU's first ban on energy-wasting incandescent lightbulbs, by as early as January 2009. This simple but historic step came as governments met in Bali to discuss next steps on tackling the global climate emergency. Over the past year, a number of EU countries have talked about similar bans, but Ireland is the first to act.

November 2007: Together with other environmental groups, Greenpeace gets 1.5 million signatures of support and pushes through Argentina's first federal forest protection law. The new law includes a nationwide one-year moratorium on clearing of native forests while forest management regulations are put in place. After a year, any jurisdiction still lacking regulations will continue to be prohibited from issuing new logging and land clearing permits. The Forest Law also establishes environmental impact studies and public hearings - measures that will help protect forests where indigenous people live and small scale farmers.

After dumping its deadly cargo, the ship simply sailed to Estonia unhindered until Greenpeace took action.

July 25, 2006: McDonald's agrees to stop selling chicken fed on soya grown in newly deforested areas of the Amazon rainforest, then becomes instrumental in getting other food companies and supermarkets, such as Marks & Spencer, Sainsbury's, ASDA and Waitrose, to sign up to a zero deforestation policy as well. But it goes even further than that, and pressure from all these companies forces their suppliers, the big multinational soya companies such as Cargill, to agree a two-year moratorium on buying soya from newly deforested areas.

June 26, 2006: Dell becomes the latest company to promise to remove the worst toxic chemicals from it products, closely following the move of its rival HP. Both companies have been pressured by us to make their products greener and help tackle the growing mountain of toxic e-waste.

May 31, 2006: Despite heavy lobbying by the nuclear power industry, Spain has confirmed that the country's 8 operating plants will be phased out in favour of clean, renewable energy. Spain joins Sweden, Germany, Italy and Belgium as the fifth European country to abandon nuclear power.

April 3, 2006: After months of pressure, consumer actions, online activism and more than 100,000 emails from Ocean Defenders everywhere, seafood suppliers Gorton's, Sealord and parent company Nissui withdraw their active support for Japanese whaling. Whalers announce that the 32 percent share in whaling operations owned by these commercial corporations will be transferred to a "public interest entity." The retreat isolates whaling economically and probably scuppers plans to find new markets for whale products.

The decree by President Lula of Brazil to create the 6.4 million hectare (around 16 million acres) conservation area is a great victory for the people of the Amazon battling landgrabbers, cattle ranchers and loggers. The decree calls for around 1.6 million hectares to be permanently protected and totally off limits to logging and deforestation.

But the European Parliament has banned manufacturers from using six of these toxic chemicals, freeing Europe from many toxic toys for good.

March 22, 2005: Photocopy giant Xerox agrees to stop buying timber pulp from StoraEnso, the Finnish national logging company which is cutting down one of Europe's last remaining ancient forests. Pradhan, head of Bayer's Corporate Communications in India. This announcement followed earlier actions by Greenpeace outside Bayer's headoffice in Mumbai.

October 29, 2004: MQ Publications (MQP) in the UK becomes the first UK publisher to publicly announce its collaboration with the Greenpeace Book Campaign. The project cost millions of dollars in government subsidies which should have been spent on renewable energy.

June 17, 2004: Consumer power scored a victory following the announcement from electronics giant Samsung that it plans to phase out hazardous chemicals in its products. Seeing its brand-name products graded red - as containing hazardous chemicals - on the Greenpeace database, prompted the company to do the right thing on dangerous chemicals.

June 10, 2004: Publishers of 34 Canadian magazines pledged to shift away from paper containing tree fibre from Canada's ancient forests thanks to ongoing pressure from the Markets Initiative coalition, of which Greenpeace Canada has a key role. The coalition has similar commitments from 71 Canadian book publishers including the Canadian publisher of Harry Potter, which printed the Order of the Phoenix on AFF paper in June 2003. Greenpeace Canada's work to protect its forests also encouraged Cascades, as the second largest producer of tissue products in Canada to commit to an Ancient Forest-Friendly purchasing policy.

June 1, 2004: Iceland steps back from plans to kill 500 minke, sei, and fin whales over two years, announcing a quota of only 25 minkes for the year. Greenpeace web activists fueled domestic opposition by gathering 50,000 worldwide signatures to a pledge to visit Iceland if the government would stop whaling. With a potential value of more than US$ 60 million in tourist spend, against a whaling programme which generated 3-4 million in profits, the pledge dramatically illustrated that whales are worth more to Iceland alive than dead.

May 11, 2004: Thanks to years of pressure from environmental groups, the consumers, our cyberactivists and Greenpeace, we can celebrate a victory for the environment following the announcement by Monsanto that it would suspend further development or open field trials of its genetically engineered, Roundup Ready wheat. Monsanto stated that it was defering all further efforts to introduce the crop and that it was discontinuing breeding and field-level research of the wheat. This follows a similar announcement in 2003 when the company announced its withdrawal from the development of pharmaceutical crops.

April 2, 2004: The UN International Maritime Organisation (IMO) designate the Baltic sea as a "Particularly Sensitive Sea Area," a decision which Greenpeace advocated for years. The IMO regulates shipping worldwide, and the new designation means tougher restrictions on oil tankers and other dangerous cargo vessels. The move was vehemently opposed by the shipping and oil industries.

March 31, 2004: Following the controversial UK government approval of genetically engineered (GE) maize for commercial planting, the only company authorized to grow GE maize withdraws its application. In a victory for activists and consumers across Europe who lobbyed for tougher legislation and boycotted GE products, Bayer CropScience, a German company authorised to plant an herbicide-resistant variety of maize known as Chardon LL, said regulations on how and where the crop could be planted would make it "economically non-viable." Chardon LL was the crop pulled up by Greenpeace UK activists in 1999. The activists were acquitted of charges of criminal damage when the court agreed they were acting in the interest of protecting the environment.

February 18, 2004: The Stockholm Convention comes into force following years of lobbying by Greenpeace and other environmental organisations. A key feature of the Convention calls for the elimination of all Persistent Organic Pollutants. They include intentionally produced chemicals, such as pesticides and PCBs, as well as by-products such as cancer-causing dioxins that are released from industries that use chlorine and from waste incinerators.

August 2003: The Deni, indiginous peoples of the Amazon, celebrate the end of an 18-year campaign to mark their land as protected from logging. 13 Greenpeace volunteers, including a member of the cyberactivist community, used GPS technology and a helicopter for a month to create an "eco-corridor" around 3.6 million hectares of land.

Gudeg

The evening air at Yogyakarta is gradually filled with the clinks of the dishware served by food stalls’ waiters. The gamelan music starts to escort some Javanese dancers at their stage performance. Some of the classical rhythms are passed through the wind, from a corner of the street where some young backpackers are sipping their coffee at a café.

In many parts of the city, from the five-star hotels until those outdoor eating stalls called ‘lesehan’, it is easy to enjoy the night over a delightful dinner. Usually gudeg comes as the main menu. The food remains united to the name of Yogyakarta. The local says, if you never eat gudeg in Yogyakarta, forget that you have been there.

Gudeg is a concoction of young jackfruit, coconut milk and other local condiments such as garlic and coriander. The color is reddish brown, as the result of the jackfruit, coconut water, and palm sugar, boiled for several hours. Some people are said to add some young teakwood foliages into the jackfruit pot in its early cooking stage, to attain the precise coloration.

Gudeg is usually served on a clay plate, on top of a sheet of banana leaves. Sometimes the vendor just folds the banana leaf, makes it tight it with a sharp piece of palm leaf rib, to form a half-cone-pot called ‘pincuk’.

Many people prefer to eat their gudeg in a ‘pincuk’ because banana leaf produces an appetizing aroma when the hot temperature from the cooking affects it. The ‘pincuk’ is big enough to hold a portion of rice, gudeg and its tasty accessories. A number of options are prepared on the table, for instance: fried chicken, chicken curry with rich coconut milk sauce called ‘santan areh’, hot ‘krecek’ (beef skin) curry, tofu, tempe, and chili sauce.

The gudeg itself is processed in a big clay pot. The traditional method suggests to have the food stirred with a wooden stick. No metal material - especially aluminums - should be used, to keep the taste specific as the food remains healthy.

Fried Rice

Fried rice is a popular component of Chinese cuisine and other forms of Asian cuisine. It is made from cold leftover rice fried with other leftover ingredients. It is sometimes served as the penultimate dish in Chinese banquets (just before dessert).

There are dozens of varieties of fried rice, each with their own specific list of ingredients. In Asia, the more famous varieties include Yangzhou and Fujian fried rice. In the West, Chinese restaurants catering to non-Chinese clientele have invented their own varieties of fried rice including egg fried rice, Singaporean (spicy) fried rice and the ubiquitous 'special fried rice'.

Fried rice is a common staple in American Chinese cuisine, especially in the westernized form sold at fast-food stands. What an unfortunate year for Indonesia’s tourism industry. Less than one month after the government declared 2008 Visit Indonesia Year, flooding crippled Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, the main gateway to the country, early last month.

Last week, the second annual Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Report 2008, by the Geneva-based World Economic Forum, downgraded Indonesia as a tourist destination to 80th among 130 countries surveyed. That was much worse than its position last year, which was 60th out of 124 countries.

The report showed that Indonesia scored very poorly in health and hygiene due to an inadequate supply of hospital beds, poor access to sanitation and drinking water and an acutely low number of qualified physicians.

The country also performed badly in that other pillar of the tourism industry — infrastructure. In fact, Indonesian airplanes have been banned from European airspace since last year and no progress has been made on getting this blanket ban lifted.

Indonesia scored high only in terms of natural resources, with several World Heritage natural sites and the richness of it flora and fauna, and price competitiveness. But these strengths were undermined by such major weaknesses as underdeveloped infrastructure, including air and ground transportation.

There are even great concerns related to safety, particularly the prevalence of road accidents.

No wonder Indonesia, though richly endowed with a wide variety of cultures and interesting sites, has remained among the least popular tourist destinations even in the Southeast Asian region, outranked by Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. Last year, Indonesia received just around 5.5 million tourists, compared to more than 9 million arrivals in Malaysia and almost 20 million in Singapore.

The survey showed the top-ranked countries in the travel and tourism industry — Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Australia, Spain, the United Kingdom, the United States, Sweden, Canada and France — understand the importance of support businesses and regulatory frameworks, coupled with world-class transportation and tourism infrastructure and a focus on nurturing human and natural resources.

Countries have vastly different underlying operational conditions, depending on where they fall in the tourism development spectrum. All have unique tourism products to offer, but the central goal is to encourage improvement in the underlying competitive conditions and infrastructure.

This is again where Indonesia is fundamentally weak, even in nature-based tourism, where the country should have a strong comparative advantage.

This latest travel and tourism report from the World Economic Forum should serve as a strong wake-up call for us, especially the government, to reinvigorate the tourism industry, especially now in the midst of a weakening global economy and uncertainty in the international financial market.

International tourism is known as a resilient industry, never suffering a deep and lasting recession and able to recover quickly because the need to travel, whether for business or leisure, is so deeply ingrained in our societies.

As a resource-based industry, tourism is also an ideal business for Indonesia to develop because of its multiplier effect and the labor-intensive nature of its operations. It directly benefits local communities economically. Travel businesses do their best when they use the local workforce, services, products and supplies.

The tourism industry also supports the integrity of a place. Destination-savvy travelers seek out businesses that emphasize the character of a locale. Tourism revenue in turn raises the perceived value of those assets.

Travel-related businesses such as hotels, restaurants, transportation, handicrafts and cultural shows are all labor intensive, the very kind of enterprises needed to absorb the huge pool of job seekers here.

But it is precisely because of its multi-sectoral activities that the promotion of the tourism industry should involve not only the tourism ministry but all other state and private organizations that provide the basic infrastructure and public services, including immigration, customs, transportation, accommodation and security.

Recently, I often to post information or article about sea turtle, particullarly at Indonesia. If you don't know, sea turtle is the endangered animal at world. If you can count it's population, you can meet the number of San Marino population. Imagine this, we, human always complain about travel with far distance. Even the distance of 200 m, we always complain too far and we ride with car or motorcycle. But sea turtle is the animal which can make us, human, shame. Sea turtle can travels 20.600 km. Yes, you can shame now!
There is an example of that fact. A leatherback sea turtle, tagged at her nesting beach in Indonesia, has been tracked by satellite across the Pacific Ocean to the coast of Oregon and back. The satellite tag, deployed by researchers from the U.S. National Marine Fisheries Service, recorded at least 20.600 km over the course of 647 days before its signal faded.
Endangered leatherback sea turtles are the largest of all living turtles. In the Pacific Ocean, adult leatherbacks nest in the tropical beaches of Indonesia and Malaysia and migrate to feeding grounds off North America in the summer. In British Columbia, leatherbacks appear to be attracted by the large blooms of sea jellies that occur off our coast in the summer.

The turtle’s journey represents the longest recorded migration of any vertebrate animal. Even humpback whales, which make the longest migration for a mammal, swim at most about 8.000 km from the Antarctic to Central America.

All over the world, leatherback turtle populations are plummeting. The western Pacific leatherback turtle population has decreased from a thriving 91,000 in the 1980s to less than 5,000 today. The biggest threats to leatherbacks and other sea turtles include loss or degradation of their nesting beaches, direct harvesting of eggs and hunting of adults, and entanglement in fishing gear and marine debris.

I took this information based a letter from one man for Indonesian Minister of Environment. After I read that, I shock because my beloved country is the SEA TURTLE SLAUGHTER. That's sad because our people grew up with tradition to keep balance between human and nature. The sea turtle is just not ordinary animal. This species are rare at world. This species can keep balance of nature. So I hope Indonesia will change it's policy to save rare species.

And this is the letter...........

My name is Robin Marinos, a US citizen and frequent visitor to the beautiful islands of Indonesia. Earlier this year I videotaped the slaughtering of a whaleshark off Tangkoko Reserve. I campaigned against and witnessed the removal of the draw/trap nets belonging to EKASAPTA USAHAMINA. The closure resulted from the cooperation and aid of many concerned private individuals and public officials. This, plus the intense focus drawn upon the case from all angles to the top of the Indonesian government, resulted in the expedient closure after five weeks of continuous struggling. The success put an end to the devastation of the marine environment and its creatures around N.E. Suluwesi, plus added educational input for the marine conservation community and their cause to prevent such forms of devastational fishing.

I am sad to report that an even greater horror awaited me at Tajung, Benoa, Bali, where I recorded the most disgusting and cruel treatment toward any form of living being as I visited the socially accepted, uncontrolled, unmonitored green sea turtle trading and slaughtering pens. Some turtles were decaying with infections as they slowly rotted to their inevitable death, sometimes the torture lasting weeks before chosen to die normally as turtle steak or sate in a Chinese or Japanese restaurant. Others were damaged so badly that they were as good as dead. One even had one front fin torn off with only the shoulder bone showing.

The turtles demonstrated emotions as I moved around them. I couldn't help noticing the turtles, dehydrated and unfed for up to three weeks, spilling their last teardrops sometimes bobbing their heads off the floor as to plead for a little water. Ttheir captors stood on top of them to describe with bravado how they enjoyed listening to the turtles "scream like babies as they cut their throats". This is their ultimate fate after weeks of suffering. Much of this is clearly noticeable on the video taken.

The fact that it is traditionally accepted in Bali to slaughter and feed on the green sea turtle for only certain ceremonies one thing, but the uncontrolled and unmonitored methods of catching, handling, storing, and slaughtering is quite another. The fact that about one thousand (1,000) are sacrificed for ceremonial purposes per calendar year primarily on southern Bali seems bad enough, and that the officially accepted quota set four times that at four thousand (4,000) far exceeding the tradition needs seems too much. However the true numbers of well over fifteen plus thousand (+15,000) does not correspond to tradition needs nor adhere to legal conformity.

Furthermore, the legal shell length size of between 60-90 centimeters are the only acceptable sizes for this trade. During my uninvited visit to the turtle slaughter grounds, I stood there and measured the turtles tied appropriately in a praying position, front fins tied with cord, holes through the fins to prevent movement and to be lifted by. The largest measured approximately 110 cm., the smallest 55 cm from top to bottom of its shell. I estimate that at-least 40% of the 300-plus turtles were outside the legal size.

As admitted by the main trader and exploiter of this unmonitored trade, so called, 'Rasta' PAK Hasan, the turtles are caught and trapped all around Indonesian reefs, from Irian Jaya to Sumatra, using many fishing methods; a slight hint toward 'maybe yes' when questioned about cyanide and water-bomb (dynamite) fishing. The trader admited that he has no control of the fishing methods used by others who pillage reefs to catch turtles (sometimes as by-catch), later held in pens until arrival of the Bali turtle traders, normally costing 10-20,000 Rupiah per specimen (US$ 4.5 to 9).

Today, one can travel even the remote Island areas of the Indonesian Archipelago and find mostly ethnic Chinese and Taiwanese operating holding pens offshore and along the coast filled with many species of turtles and other large reeflife. This, I experienced from the Togian, Banggi, Tukanbesi Islands, to remote areas of the main Suluwesi Island this year. It leaves one to wonder really how many of these illegal holding pens really exist and to what extent this trade contributes to the damage to the marine ecosystems. One is left to wonder how much the turtle collection and trade being exercised irresponsibly daily contributes to the total reef damage. An example, three weeks ago a small ship was spotted by tourists now in Bali, fishing the few turtle left within the diving resort area of Giliair and Gilimeno, N.E. Lombok. Within the last year, there are at-least another three coastal areas in the Archipelago no longer sighting turtles breeding or laying eggs, all of those turtles born there have evidently perished!

As long as there exists a so-called quota, all forms of exploitation and manipulation, legal or illegal will persist and I believe, will get progressively worse. Further, the excuse of tradition has become weakened by the increasing availability and consumption of nontraditional foods. Not to mention that the turtle is supposedly "Sacred" to the Balinese people. Only five kilometers from the Tajung slaughter grounds there are signs displaying the Turtle and the penalties of up to 'one hundred million Rupiah' (US$ 42,000) for killing them. Without enforcement signs like these are meaningless!

Please help us stop these torturous and practices and join other nations who have placed an outright ban on capture, killing and trading of green sea turtles. All of Indonesia and the world will gain at the expense of a few selfish businessmen and their unrefined, uneducated, glutonus patrons.

I get this video from Greenpeace. I don't know with your opinion, but I think this is.........hard to explain it...........yes, I know that video's great, but I think that's little naughty. Maybe from East people (Asian, especially Moslem) sight, that video will had negative critics. Because back from my statement, that video made someone think wrong or NAUGHTY!!! This is something which means CREATIVE. I know if, Greenpeace activists alwys make some good movie or video with precious meaning. I think they had a good work. Back to problem, the rainforest have few location at world. You can say, Brazil, Indonesia, Kongo, Papua New Guinea, or India.

No rainforest today can be considered to be undisturbed. Human induced deforestation plays a significant role in causing rainforests to release carbon dioxide, as do natural processes such as drought that result in tree death. Some climate models run with interactive vegetation predict a large loss of Amazonian rainforest around 2050 due to drought, leading to forest dieback and the subsequent feedback of releasing more carbon dioxide.

Woow....The Green Olympic Made Another Polutions Again!!!

You can believe the fact if Beijing Olympic 2008 are the modern, the clean, the green, and the biggest budget ever held at Olympic history!!! That fact is BU**SH*T!!! You can see how much the fireworks which explode to the air. Beijing Olympic Committee claimed that pollution index before and at time of Opening Ceremony will be decreased.

Maybe that's right. But, in my opinion from I saw The Opening Ceremony, that's magnificent event, but I disappointed about that fireworks. Not their beauty and sparkling, but for firework's contribution for pollution index. That's make sense if pollution will be increased again after hard work for decrease the pollution.

But in other way, I think China people will be proud after this olympic held. Because this achievement is one big dream of China. Not just the government dream, but people of China dream. Thank You, China. That's the great work! Keep consistent with your idea and dream. One World One Dream!!!

Yes....Maybe you will ask from where I post my blog? At other country, like Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, and US, people can access internet connection from their home. But, at Indonesia, internet is luxury thing, and at another hand, internet is very important needs for educational person, like student. So the solution until now, we always use access from place where internet connected to computers.
That place known as warnet or "warung internet". In English, that's mean internet cafe where computers in such numbers, constructed at small box. In small box with size 1m x 1,5m, there are sofa, desk, CPU, LCD monitor, sometimes with video camera. That luxury priced 2.000-3.000 rupiah/hour or $20-$50 cents/hour. You can believe that!!! That the reality at my beloved country, Indonesia.

But still, there are many people can't afford that price. Because our GDP is $1.900/ capita. With a dolar (10.000 rupiah), many people, in middle class or poor, can survive at one day. Indonesia is full with food and material source. Anything at here is CHEAP with US standard.
Now back to problem, My PC and notebook now connected with internet via modem. With 266.000 rupiah/month or US$26/month, I can connect to world every day. So don't worry for anyone who expect my blog updated every day. Believe it, KAMPOENG never outdate and became old school. Stay in my touch!!!

Indonesia's Pasadena, Tomohon Flower Festival

Pasadena Roses Festival, which celebrated at California, US every year, can attracts thousands tourist, domestics and international. Now, in 2008, to support Indonesia Tourism program, Visit Indonesia year, every province and region, make a lot of event which targeted increase of international tourist's visit. Tomohon, a city on Sulawesi (Celebes) in Indonesia. It is a new city in the province of North Sulawesi (Sulawesi Utara), Indonesia. Tomohon is known for flower planting at people's homes. Nearby is the mountain Gunung Lokon. Tomohon is known for wood house production, palm sugar (aren) production, vegetable agriculture, and as a centre of Christian ministry and as a student town.

But now, because the initiative of new elected major, Jefferson S. M Rumajar, SE, Tomohon became the "Pasadena Roses Festival" with name of Tomohon Flower Festival 2008. Thousands of people, filled artery road of Tomohon, North Sulawesi on Thurdsday, July 2nd 2008, not to saw politic party's champaign but to took part of opening launch Tournament of Flower (TOF). Tomohon Tournament of Flower, is the first of national flower's march at Indonesia. The march of vehicles or fload which decorated with millions of flower got many applause from visitor, like huge hawk (Garuda) bird's design fload which presented by East Kalimantan contingent or design of duck with gold jewel from Jambi. Each province, region, and town at Indonesia competited in the TOF to celebrated Visit Indonesia Year 2008. Every unique icon in every province became the design of fload and decorated with colourful of flower.

Earth is a spectacular new documentary made by the BBC that follows the lives of three wild animals over a year. Created by the BBC's Natural History Unit in parallel with the award-winning TV series 'Planet Earth', its production statistics are staggering. It took five years to make, with 40 specialist camera crews spending 4,500 days in the field (including 250 days of aerial photography), filming in 200 locations across 26 countries. It tracks polar bears in the Arctic, elephants in the Kalahari and a humpback whale, through the trials and tribulations of 4 seasons in their lives. The narration is not delivered by Sir David Attenborough, as in the television series. Instead, the velvety tones of Star Trek 's Patrick Stewart have been employed and, while much of the narration merely reinforces what we are looking at, it does toss out one startling statistic.

The baby polar bears stick their little noses out of their cave into the light and tumble down hills of snow. Forests bloom from snow drops to blue bells to daffodils in an instant. African elephants are shown making their punishing march across the Kalahari Desert to the waters of the Okavango Delta. At one stage, desperate for a drink, they have to share a waterhole with a pride of lions. Six out of seven of the world’s species of turtles are found in Indonesia. Because of the large numbers of islands, extensive coastline, sea grass and coral reefs, Indonesia provides important nesting and foraging grounds to many species and is home to the largest rookery for Green Turtles recorded in SouthEast Asia, in the Berau Islands, East Kalimantan, and is home to the largest nesting rookery for Leatherback turtles along the Northern Coast of Papua. Indonesia also represents important migration routes, lying as it does at the cross-roads of the Pacific and Indian Oceans.

Sea turtles are designated worldwide as threatened and endangered species, in part due to their unique life history which makes sea turtle populations vulnerable to several sources of mortality at critical stages in their life. Many species of sea turtle require decades to reach maturity, they come ashore onto beaches to lay their eggs, and they have a migratory nature, where their migrations may extend across national jurisdictions and the high seas. Turtles are therefore vulnerable to accidental interactions with fishing gears, to having their nesting beaches eroded or washed away, and to the harvesting of meat and eggs. Based on early monitoring data, it is estimated that many sea turtle species in Indonesia are reduced to up to 90% of former levels. The Government of Indonesia has recognized the urgent need for conservation measure to protect and restore the sea turtle populations in Indonesian waters, and has put in place a number of ‘in-situ’ and ‘ex-situ’ conservation measures

Presently, there are 36 Designated Marine Conservation Areas in Indonesia covering about 4,700,000 ha of total area:

5 Marine Strict Nature Reserves
19 Marine Nature Recreation Parks
6 Marine Wildlife Sanctuary

Pulau Sangalaki and Pulau Sammana in the Derawan Archipelago of Berau Regency in East Kalimantan: The Derawan archipelago is home to the largest nesting rookery of Green Turtles recorded in SE Asia, and are one of a series of important green turtle populations found along the coast of Borneo. Turtles nest all year round in Derawan Islands, with an average of thirty turtles estimated to nest each night on Pulau Sangalaki alone. In April 2001, the local district government (Berau Bupati Decree No.44/2001) also revoked the concessions to collect eggs
on Sangalaki, increasing the overall level of protection for the nesting sites in this important area, which formerly only covered Pulau Samama. Meru Betiri: Meru Betiri National Park in East Java, is a nesting beach for 4 species of turtle; green, olive ridley, leatherback and hawksbill. Park staff at Meru Betiri have been running a monitoring and tagging program for the past seven years, the longest continuous tagging program in Indonesia. The recent tags were provide by SEAFDEC.

- Pledge to protect the Pacific’s most important remaining nesting site for Leatherback turtles in    Papua within twelve months.
- Call on governments visited by the Leatherbacks after leaving the nesting beaches in    Indonesia, to enter into bilateral agreements focused on protecting the leatherbacks.
- Call on fishing nations and the fishing industry to work on finding solutions that benefit both    fishermen and turtles by minimizing accidental take and entanglement.
- Build a systematic framework for protecting the green turtle nesting population in East    Kalimantan and across the region, including transboundary sites.
- Reduce the take of turtle products domestically to traditional use alone and to sustainable    levels.

Sea turtles (Superfamily Chelonioidea) are turtles found in all the world's oceans except the Arctic Ocean. There are seven living species of sea turtles: flatback, green, hawksbill, Kemp's Ridley, leatherback, loggerhead and olive ridley. The East Pacific subpopulation of the green turtle was previously classified as a separate species, the black turtle, but DNA evidence indicates that it is not evolutionarily distinct from the green turtle. All species except the leatherback are in the family Cheloniidae; the leatherback belongs to the family Dermochelyidae and is its only member.

Marine turtles are caught worldwide, despite it being illegal to hunt most of the species in many countries. A great deal of intentional marine turtle harvests worldwide are for the food industry. In many parts of the world, the flesh of sea turtles are considered fine dining. Historically, many coastal communities around the world have depended on sea turtles as a source of protein. Several turtles could be harvested at once and kept alive on their backs for months until needed. The skin of the flippers are also prized for use as shoes and assorted leather-goods. To a much lesser extent, specific species of marine turtles are targeted not for their flesh, but for their shells. Tortoiseshell, a traditional decorative ornamental material used in Japan and China, is derived from the carapace scutes of the hawksbill turtle.

Sea turtles play key roles in two ecosystems that are critical to them as well as to humans—the oceans and beaches/dunes. If sea turtles were to become extinct, the negative impact on beaches and the oceans would potentially be significant.

In the oceans, for example, sea turtles, especially green sea turtles, are one of the very few creatures (manatees are another) that eat a type of vegetation called sea grass that grows on the sea floor. Sea grass must be kept short to remain healthy, and beds of healthy sea grass are essential breeding and development areas for many species of fish and other marine life. A decline or loss of sea grass beds would mean a loss of the marine species that directly depend on the beds, which would trigger a chain reaction and negatively impact marine and human life. When one part of an ecosystem is destroyed, the other parts will follow.

Beaches and dunes are a fragile ecosystem that does not get many nutrients to support its vegetation, which is needed to help prevent erosion. Sea turtles contribute nutrients to dune vegetation from their eggs. Every year, sea turtles lay countless numbers of eggs in beaches during nesting season. Along one twenty-mile (32 km) stretch of beach in Florida alone, for example, more than 150,000 pounds of eggs are laid each year. Nutrients from hatched eggs as well as from eggs that never hatch and from hatchlings that fail to make it into the ocean are all sources of nutrients for dune vegetation. A decline in the number of sea turtles means fewer eggs laid, less nutrients for the sand dunes and its vegetation, and a higher risk for beach erosion.

There is a news from Greenpeace web,
Bhubaneshwar , India — With turtle mortalities due to illegal fishing spiralling out of control, Greenpeace today presented the Orissa government with a clear ‘upper limit’ target for turtle mortality along the coast from Paradip to Chilika. Criticising the government for failing to solve a recurring tragedy, Greenpeace demanded that the funds recently released by the Centre be utilised to undertake effective patrolling to prevent illegal trawling. As of 31st January, 2,970 turtle carcasses have been counted along this stretch of the coast. Greenpeace is challenging the government to reduce the current rate of turtle mortalities by 20%, at the very least until the end of April 2008.
“Even though the resources are now available, it is ironic that the turtle toll until January 31 is almost 3000 in the Paradip–Chilika stretch, a dramatic 76% increase from the average of the previous four turtle seasons. While reducing mortality to zero might not be practical, it is high time the Government of Orissa demonstrates its commitment to protecting its turtles, by setting itself, progressively depreciating annual turtle mortality reduction targets. It must start with what is left of this turtle season. This benchmark would enable the Government’s turtle protection efforts to be evaluated in an objective manner” said Sanjiv Gopal, Oceans Campaigner, Greenpeace India.

Illegal fishing and especially trawling has resulted in the death of over 100,000 turtles over the last decade. Even as illegal fishing in the Devi area continues unabated, the situation in the Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary remains unknown, with no independent verification of official figures possible. Further, the government is not open to joint efforts on monitoring the mortality of turtles in collaboration with conservation groups and NGOs, as this would reveal shocking levels of turtle casualties on the Orissa coast. While the Government has maintained that annual mortalities from the last three seasons has not exceeded 4000, estimates from several independent agencies place this at a range above 10,000 for every season.

Greenpeace has been monitoring the situation in the current turtle season (2007-2008), from November 2007, to ensure that the resources made available to the Department of Forests and Wildlife are utilized appropriately and effectively. From evidence gathered until January 2008, it is clear that inspite of the required resources being made available, the Government of Orissa is once again failing in it’s responsibility to protect the turtles that throng Orissa’s coastal waters, every year from November to May.

The turtle death toll, along the Paradip to Chilika coast, has already crossed 3000 turtles (until January 31, 2008). Illegal fishing in the Devi area, especially trawling, continues unabated. The situation in the Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary remains unknown, with no independent verification of official figures possible.

This is greenpeace's act. As a first step, to demonstrate commitment and accountability, towards resources which have been made available to ensure effective patrolling and reduction in the mortalities of turtles from mechanised fisheries and especially trawling, Greenpeace is calling the Government of Orissa and the Department of Forests and Wildlife in particular
• To put in place mechanisms, which would include regular marine patrolling, to ensure that the current rate of mortalities in the Devi region, are reduced.
• By way of an objective evaluation of these efforts, this would imply that the mortalities of Olive Ridley turtles in the devi region does not exceed 3760 for the current season, until April 2008, the current figure until January 2008 being 2970.
• This would mean that the mortality for February, March and April 2008 does not exceed 790 or a drop in mortality by 21%.

As part of it’s ongoing campaign to protect the Olive Ridley Turtles, and the interests of traditional fisher communities, Greenpeace will continue to monitor the situation and await to see how the Government of Orissa responds to this challenge positively, before taking any further action.

Hallucination of 100 Years National Awakening.....And Waisak?

WHY? That's my question for our leaders of Indonesia. Why we can so proud to celebrate 100 years National Awakening?

I mean, our founding fathers in heaven, like Dr. Soetomo, Wahidin Sudirohusodo, Ki Hajar Dewantara, Ir. Soekarno, Moch. Hatta, and others hero of Indonesia, even my grandfather, will be tears in their eyes. Because they never expect if Indonesia's people still under rule of their brothers, Indonesian Elite!
After that, in big noise of 100 years National Awakening Celebration, we, Indonesian, forgot about our brothers and sisters who celebrate their
holy day, Waisak. Currently, we are more and more exposed to the ferocious attitudes of some of our religious people, who destroy anything not in accordance with their religious interpretations, as if they knew God's wishes.

These people believe the "other" is a threat, being different is a threat and pluralism is a threat.
Tauhid, or oneness, is seen blindly as becoming one typical "species", full of fanaticism, not in terms of interdependency between God, humans and nature.

On one side, politicians show their people they have attained the Moge mode of success, which is interpreted as truly Indonesian.
On the other side, some of our religious leaders show their ummat (followers) that being one and only one type of radical religion is the truest religiosity for Indonesians.

Both believe such a monolithic and homogeneous status as one Indonesian and one religion is the real aim of being Indonesian. They neglect the fact that this is betraying the aims of Indonesia and religion, which are supposed to respect multiculturalism and pluralism.
Unfortunately, both of these institutional powers see the Indonesian crisis as caused by globalization. In their interpretation, they believe the source of that crisis is from the impact of globalized morals and values.

Global capitalism, global culture and even global conspiracies are the scapegoats we use to justify our radical behaviors. Even more unfortunately, this religious radicalism tends to masquerade as the only solution, both for political and religious leaders, for the future of Indonesia, ignoring that Indonesia is the result of globalization since the beginning of our multicultural and pluralistic Indonesia. Globalization is not good or bad, but both, depending on our wisdom to give it meaning and value for our purposes.

This May 20, Indonesians commemorated two important events: 100 years of National Awakening and Waisak, when the historical Buddha, Sidhartha Gautama, was born, attained his enlightenment and achieved his Parrinibanna (perfection).

These two events call us to reflect on both the revival of nationalism and religion. We are in a globalized world and we are all facing the same threats: global warming and the changing climate that threaten all aspects of our economical, political and sociological needs.
Global radicalism and fundamentalism is essentially reluctant and ignorant of this issue, for the se sake of their material advantages and interests. Agreeing with our Buddhist friend, Venerable Vidya Sasana Sthavia, in Religion and Conservation Dialogue: Promoting Union to Prevent Forest Devastation and Climate Change (Bali, 2007), we have to state that the Earth, particularly Indonesia, where we live, should be conserved by showing religious communities their connection to nature and the environment, as reflected in Buddha's teaching about the law of interdependency.

Encourage all religious communities to start promoting practical environmental conservation efforts, as reflected in Buddha's teaching about upaya kausalya, which means doing good deeds practically and creatively for the well being of others.

Encourage religious communities to conserve nature as a moral obligation that is supported by religion and as an act to obliterate greed, the main cause of moral, religious, political, economical and environmental crises.

The celebration at Gelora Bung Karno isn't neccesary. Think about it, 100 billion of APBN is just for celebration. I mean, I 'm so proud of my country, my people, and our cultures. But we still have any problems which don't have solution. Together, with the governments, Indonesian people must rise and go forward to become a strong nation. It (the celebration) just a little bit of entertainment for those sitted nicely at the podium. Could you heard voice of the snake that says i have 'bisa' also... zzzzsss.

DOVE, Produk Penghancur Hutan Indonesia

Recently, Greenpeace posted some news which Unilever sacrified the forrest of Indonesia (Borneo) to makes it's products, Dove. Unilever, the company behind products like Dove soap, is driving forest destruction and speeding up climate change by buying palm oil from companies which are destroying Indonesia's rainforests to make way for palm oil plantations. By their own admission, Unilever is the biggest single user of palm oil in the world.

Unilever pretends to be an environmentally responsible company, but what it is actually responsible for is destroying areas of rainforest, driving species extinction and speeding up global warming. Being one of the biggest users of palm oil on the planet, Unilever must stop buying palm oil from these companies and call for a halt on the destruction of Indonesian forests to grow palm oil.

Greenpeace wants all companies involved in palm oil production to commit to stopping further deforestation by supporting a moratorium on all rainforest and peatland conversion. The following minimum criteria must be met by the palm oil industry:

No new plantations within mapped forest areas

No plantations resulting in the degradation of peatlands

No plantations or expansion post November 2005 resulting in deforestation or degradation of high conservation value areas including peatlands

No plantations or plantation expansion established on indigenous peoples and other forest dependent communities without their free prior and informed consent

Establish full supply chain traceability and segregation systems which exclude palm oil that fails to meet the above criteria

Greenpeace is not calling for a boycott. We are asking Unilever to act responsibly and to ensure that their products have not been produced at the expense of Indonesian rainforests and the climate. That means that their suppliers are not involved in the continued destruction of these rainforests.

We believe environmentalists and Greenpeace supporters can be more effective if we pressure Unilever to change, exposing the truth about palm oil and showing that we care. Like a negative restaurant review is more damaging than no review at all – Unilever is more sensitive to public exposure and debate than a consumer boycott. What's more, deadly serious as the problem is, our approach allows us to do creative, subversive, fun things we love anyway.

We, representative of Indonesian people, believe that Global Warming must stooped right now. We believe that condition of people, especially Indonesia, must upgraded to upper level. Because we care about this world and earth.

Ya, Mittal, anda tidak salah baca, tetapi apabila anda masih belum mengenal bahkan mendengar nama tersebut, carilah di internet. Makanya sering-seringlah anda membuka Wikipedia atau Google, jangan membuka situs porno terus. Carilah majalah Forbes tahun 2005, dimana orang ini dinobatkan sebagai orang terkaya
di planet ini, setelah dua pengusaha Amerika: Bill Gates dan Warren Buffet. Bisnisnya telah berada di keempat benua di bumi ini yang mengkhususkan diri pada satu bidang, produksi baja. Puncak karir orang ini diraih saat tahun 2006, dinobatkan sebagai produsen baja terbesar di dunia. Pada1 tahun kemudian, Maret 2007, kekayaannya ditaksir US$ 32 miliar (Rp 288 triliun-atau hampir separuh APBN Indonesia).

Lakshmi Nivas Mittal, nama lengkap dari subjek Biografi kali ini. Bagi kita, orang Indonesia mungkin asing mendengar nama ini. Tetapi bagi Lakhsmi Mittal, Indonesia sudah menjadi rumah kedua bagi dirinya. Rumahnya saat ini berada di London, tepatnya Kensington Palace Garden dengan nilai US$ 128 juta (Rp1,2 triliun) yang bertetangga dengan rumah orang-orang kaya dunia, seperti rumah Sultan Hasanal Bolkiah (Brunei) dan Raja Fahd (Arab Saudi). Jadi mungkinkah seorang yang luar biasa kaya ini, bahkan melebihi si "raja" baja Indonesia, Aburizal Bakrie, mempunyai kerendahan hati untuk mengakui Indonesia adalah rumahnya juga? Perjalanan hidup Mittal diawali dengan tangisan bayi yang lahir di sebuah desa miskin yang bernama Sadulpur, di wilayah distrik Churu, negara bagian Rajasthan, kawasan bagian barat India. Nama byi itu adalah Lakshmi Nivas Mittal atau disebut juga Lakshmi Narayan Mittal. Kelahiran yang dicatat pada tanggal 15 Juni 1950 kelak akan menggegerkan dunia perekonomian global.

"Mereka tak punya pendapatan memadai," kata Sushil Kumar, 61, editor mingguan Sadulpur Times. "Mereka berebut membongkar apa yang disimpan ayah mereka untuk dimakan, karena mereka sangat miskin," kata Shankar Lal Saraogi, 78, paman Mittal, seperti dikutip Majalah Time, edisi 5 Februari 2006. "Mereka tidak berasal dari keluarga prestisius. Tapi keluarga yang sangat biasa."

Mittal kecil hidup dalam keluarga miskin, (perhatian-buat anak-anak muda Indonesia, lihat darimana Mittal berasal dan menjadi apa, kalian masih berani bilang hidup kalian sudah cukup hebat?) dengan jumlah kerabat sampai
20. Mereka tinggal dalam satu rumah sederhana berlantaikan tanah, tidur di atas anyaman tali, dan masak memakaikan kayu bakar. Keluarga besar Mittal berasal dari Kasta Marwari Aggarwal. Kasta ini kebanyakan bekerja sebagai pedagang atau rentenir. Pada tahun 1969, Lakshmi Mittal menyelesaikan pendidikan tingginya di bidang bisnis
dan akuntansi dari St. Xavier's College, sebuah universitas prestisius di Kolkata ( lihatlah, hai pemuda Indonesia, Mittal sukses karena fokus pada pendidikannya, yang mana sebuah institusi top di India). Sembari kuliah, Mittal membantu bisnis ayahnya. Dia menjalani perkuliahan mulai pukul 06.00-09.30, lalu membantu bisnis ayahnya secara part time (Busseet, hebat sekali kerja sambilannya, bandingkan kerja sambilan rata-rata mahasiswa Indonesia, jadi penjaga toko HP atau warnet). Selain cerdas, Mittal dikenal pekerja keras dan gila kerja (Workaholic).

Waktu itu, periode 1970-an, usaha ayahnya harus menghasilkan 20 ribu ton baja setahun. Volume produksi itu, kelak tiga dekade kemudian, hanyalah 0,03% dari volume produksi imperium bisnis Mittal yang mencapai 63 juta ton setahun, sebanding dengan 20% pasokan kebutuhan baja dunia.

Dalam pengamatan Mittal, iklim usaha di India pada awal 1970-an itu tidak kondusif. Pemerintah membenbankan pajak amat besar pada dunia usaha, sampai 97% (Heran, kemana lari itu uang ya,.....tanyalah pada daun-daun yang bergelantungan). Sementara kuota izin usaha baja swasta sangat dibatasi. Lalu bagaimana bisa Mittal mempunyai usaha baja yang besar saat ini dengan dinding yang begitu tinggi serta tebal, yang menghalangi jalannya itu?

Tahun 1976, di usia yang baru 26 tahun, Mittal memutuskan untuk merantau, seperti ayahnya dulu. Namun Lakshmi berpikiran jauh, melebihi ayahnya, melanglang buana lintas negara. Ia tidak berpikiran sempit. Dunia tidak selebar daun kelor (iya sih, tapi juga sepanjang tali kolor). Bersama istrinya, Usha, dan putra pertamanya, Aditya, yang belum genap berumur setahun, Mittal terbang meninggalkan negara yang amat dicintainya (besarnya cinta Mittal pada negaranya kelak tetap ditunjukkan meski sudah jadi konglomerat dunia). Tujuannya bukan ke Amerika Serikat, Inggris, atau Eropa, layaknya tujuan umum imigran India lain. Tapi menuju Surabaya, Indonesia!!! Mittal bersama keluarganya harus siap bersusah payah bersama di kelak kemudian hari untuk menghadapi sagalanya di negara yang asing nan jauh.

Jembatan Suramadu, Will Be A Reality or Still A Dream?

Akhir-akhir ini, Wapres Jusuf Kalla meninjau langsung ke Proyek Jembatan Nasional Suramadu, turut dalam rombongan para menteri dan kepala daerah Gubernur Jatim Bpk. Imam Utomo dan para pejabat PU. Proyek Jembatan Suramadu ini direncanakan akan selesai akhir tahun 2008. Tetapi apakah benar akan selesai tahun 2008 dan siap dioperasikan untuk umum pada tahun 2009? Ingatlah jembatan ini bukan hanya sekedar mega proyek, tapi sebuah batu loncatan untuk mega proyek yang sedang menunggu lainnya. Masih ada pembangunan Pembangkit Listrik Tenaga Nuklir (PLTN), Jembatan Jawa-Sumatra, Proyek Monorail Jakarta, Proyek Grand Borneo, dan Proyek Pembangkit Listrik
Geotermal.

Benarkah ini masih mimpi kita semua sebagai bangsa Indonesia atau akan menjadi realita yang menjadi kebanggaan kita semua. Ingat! Perjalanan kita masih panjang, entah berapa tahun lagi semua proyek itu selesai terlaksana. Tapi jangan lupakan untuk tetap merawatnya sebab kebiasaan kanak-kanak bangsa kita sangat buruk. Maunya beli, tanpa ada usaha merawat atau menjaganya......

Sejarah Panjang Membentang Impian

JAWA TIMUR kini tengah melaksanakan pekerjaan besar, pembangunan Jembatan Surabaya-Madura (Suramadu). Jembatan modern yang nantinya bisa menjadi ikon serta landmark yang membanggakan. Jembatan Suramadu adalah jembatan yang menghubungkan Surabaya di Jawa dan kota Bangkalan di Madura. Keberadaan jembatan ini akan memperlancar lalu lintas barang dan jasa. Jembatan sepanjang 5,4 kilometer itu akan menjadi pembangkit perubahan bagi Madura. Bagaimana gagasan pembanganan Jembatan Suramadu bermula, kita perlu menengok sejarahnya.

Di tahun 1960-an, Prof. Dr. Sedyatmo (alm) mengusulkan sebuah ide mengenai hubungan langsung antara pulau Sumatera dan Jawa. Sebuah ide dan teroboson 'berani' di zaman itu. Ide itu ternyata mendapat respon. Sebagai tindak lanjut, tahun 1965 dibuatlah uji coba desain (jembatan Sumatera-Jawa (Jembatan Selat Sunda) yang dibuat di Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB). Gagasan dan konsep-konsep pengembangan jembatan antar pulau selanjutnya disampaikanlah kepada Presiden RI Soeharto awal Juni 1986.

Bulan Februari 1986, Badan Perencanaan Pembangunan Nasional (Bappenas) bertemu dengan delegasi dari perusahaan perdagangan Jepang. Kemungkinan kerjasama proyek-proyek di Indonesia pun dibahas. Gayung pun bersambut. Para delegasi Jepang tersebut menyatakan memberi angin positif untuk kerjasama dalam proyek hubungan langsung Jawa-Sumatera-Bali.

Pemerintah Indonesia juga semakin bersemangat melakukan persiapan. Atas dasar konsep-konsep dari Prof. Sedyatmo, Juni 1986, Presiden Soeharto menunjuk Menteri Negara Riset dan Teknologi/ Kepala Badan Penerapan dan Pengkajian Teknologi (BPPT) BJ Habibie. Kajian awal kemungkinan hubungan langsung antarpulau Sumatera-Jawa-Bali pun dilakukan.

Proyek ini diberi nama Tri Nusa Bima Sakti. BPPT diberi tugas melakukan studi terkait dengan kondisi alam, sedangkan Departemen Pekerjaan Umum (DPU) melakukan studi tentang sosio-ekonomi dan implementasi. Di waktu yang sama, delegasi Jepang yang dipimpin Dr. Ibukiyama datang ke Indonesia untuk melakukan kajian awal. (JIF), sebuah forum kerjasama yang dibentuk perusahaan swasta Jepang dan BPPT mengusulkan untuk menyelanggarakan seminar di Jakarta sebagai usaha mempromosikan proyek Trinusa Bima Sakti. Seminar dengan judul "Japan-Indonesia Seminar on Large Scale Bridges and Under Sea Tunnel" dilaksanakan di Jakarta, 21-24 Japan-IndonesiaScience and Technoloy Forum September 1986. Seminar tersebut kemudian dilanjutkan dengan serangkaian studi pendahuluan hingga tahun 1989. Karena studi tersebut mencakup hubungan tiga pulau atau lebih, nama proyek disempurnakan menjadi "Proyek Tr i Nusa Bima S a k t i dan Penyeberangan Utama". Dari kajian-kajian yang dilakukan, yang dianggap layak untuk segera diimplementasikan adalah hubungan langsung Jawa-Madura/ Bali.

Waktu terus bergulir. Departemen Pekerjaan Umum (DPU) dan BPPT, Desember 1986, secara terpisah menyampaikan proposal terkait proyek Tri Nusa Bima Sakti kepada Bappenas dan Sekretariat Kabinet (Setkab). Di saat yang sama, hasil kajian yang dipimpin oleh Dr. Ibukiyama juga dikirimkan ke Bappenas dan Setkab.

Pra Studi Kelayakan Jembatan Suramadu

Langkah kemudian pun semakin konkret dengan dilaksanakannya Preliminary study on Pra Studi Kelayakan Jembatan Suramadu Surabaya-Madura Bridging Project oleh JIF dan BPPT atas biaya dari pihak Jepang, Maret-Oktober 1990. Hasilnya diperoleh rekomendasi penting, bahwa dengan kondisi Surabaya sebagai pelabuhan terbesar kedua setelah Jakarta, serta industri ekspor sistem padat karya, maka pengembangan pulau Madura menjadi kunci pokok dalam perluasan kota metropolitan Surabaya. Melihat potensi pengembangan yang tinggi, maka pembangunan Jembatan Suramadu menjadi penting. Rekomendasi ini kemudian menjadi titik penguat untuk melakukan studi teknis dan studi pendukung lainnya. Studi ini berlangsung tahun 1990 hingga 1995. BPPT pun menyiapkan biaya dari anggaran Daftar Isian Proyek (DIP).

Akhirnya, 14 Desember 1990 Proyek Pembangunan Jembatan Surabaya-Madura dan Pengembangan Kawasan dikukuhkan sebagai proyek nasional melalui penerbitan Keputusan Presiden Nomor 55 Tahun 1990 tentang Proyek Pembangunan Jembatan Surabaya-Madura yang sekaligus memutuskan untuk membentuk tim yang terdiri dari:

Menhankam, Menkeu, Men. PU, Menperin
Menhub, Menparpostel, Mentamben,
Menneg.PPN/Ketua Bappenas, Menpera.

Krisis Moneter Yang Menunda
Krisis ekonomi yang melanda Indonesia tahun 1997 menunda sejumlah proyek besar, salah satunya Jembatan Suramadu

Namun, malang tak dapat ditolak. Semangat berletup untuk segera mewujudkan proyek besar ini harus redup sesaat. Krisis ekonomi yang melanda Asia Tenggara, juga menerpa Indonesia. Kondisi ekonomi pun menjadi carutmarut. Krisis yang tak mampu ditepis membawa efek domino yang berakibat langsung pada rencana pembangunan jembatan Suramadu. Dengan kondisi ini, dalam sidang kabinet 16 September 1997, pemerintah memutuskan untuk menunda pelaksanaan pembangunan beberapa proyek besar termasuk rencana pembangunan jembatan Suramadu. Penundaan tersebut diperkuat dengan Keputusan Presiden Nomor 39 Tahun 1997, tanggal 20 September 1997, tentang Penangguhan/ pengkajian kembali proyek pembangunan BUMN dan swasta yang berkaitan dengan Pembangunan/ BUMN.

Penundaan ini dimaksudkan untuk mengamankan kesinambungan perekonomian dan jalannya pembangunan nasional. Proyek Jembatan Surabaya-Madura termasuk dalam daftar proyek yang ditangguhkan. Namun bukan berarti proyek ini berhenti. Dalam Keputusan Presiden Nomor 8 Tahun 1998 tentang prioritas program infrastruktur, dinyatakan apabila pembangunan Jembatan Surabaya-Madura akan dilanjutkan, maka kegiatan tersebut harus masuk daftar prioritas infrastruktur yang dikoordinasikan Badan Perencanaan Pembangunan Nasional (Bappenas).

Sebuah perubahan kemudian terjadi. Keputusan Menteri Pekerjaan Umum Juni 1998, menyatakan pelaksanaan proyek pembangunan jembatan Surabaya-Madura tidak lagi melibatkan PT DMP. Untuk itu perlu dilakukan dievaluasi kembali tentang adanya konsorsium baru, baik dari dalam negeri maupun luar negeri.

Titian Perjalanan Baru

Kepres 79 / 2003 merupakan titian awal dimulainya kembali pembangunan Jembatan Suramadu

Seiring membaiknya situasi perekonomian, maka keluarlah Keputusan Presiden Nomor 79 tanggal 27 Oktober 2003 tentang pembangunan Jembatan Surabaya-Madura yang menyatakan bahwa pembangunan Jembatan Suramadu dapat dilanjutkannya kembali.

Dalam Keputusan Presiden tersebut juga dinyatakan pembangunan Jembatan Suramadu dilaksanakan sebagai bagian dari pembangunan kawasan industri, perumahan dan sektor lainnya dalam wilayah kedua sisi ujung jembatan. Pelaksanaan pembangunan Jembatan Suramadu juga harus memperhatikan Rencana Tata Ruang Wilayah (RTRW) Propinsi Jawa Timur dan Rencana Tata Ruang Kawasan (RTRK) Gersik-Bangkalan-Mojokerto-Surabaya-Sidoarjo-Lamongan (Gerbang Kertosusila) serta Pamekasan, Sampang dan Sumenep. Dengan Jembatan Suramadu, yang akan menghubungkan Surabaya dengan Pulau Madura melalui jalan darat, diharapkan ketimpangan sosial dapat segera direduksi. Arus transportasi yang cepat dan efektif akan membuat perkembangan Madura segera melejit, bersaing dengan daerah-daerah lain.

Tata wilayah dan tata guna lahan juga akan terbentuk secara proporsional. Proyek ini kelak diharapkan dapat mengukir sejarah baru dalam perkembangan transportasi di Indonesia karena untuk pertama kalinya dibangun jembatan yang menghubungkan antar dua pulau, sekaligus menjadi jembatan terpanjang di Indonesia.

Situs Porno Tetap Berkeliaran

Siapa yang bilang bahwa situs porno sudah musnah atau menjadi fosil di bumi Indonesia? Nyatanya masih banyak situs-situs, baik itu lokal maupun luar negeri, tetap dapat diakses secara bebas. Lalu bagaimana dengan penerapan Undang-Undang Informasi dan Transaksi Elektronik?

Pakar telematika Roy Suryo menyebut satu angka fantastis mengenai jumlah situs porno buatan asli orang Indonesia. Dari sekitar 24,5 juta situs dengan admin orang Indonesia, lebih dari satu jutanya adalah situs porno. Hal itu diungkapkan Roy yang ditemui usai Konferensi Pers Pengesahan UU Informasi dan Transaksi Elektronik (ITE) di Hotel Sultan, Jakarta, Selasa (25/3).

Roy mengatakan, hal ini menjadi tantangan tersendiri bagi pemerintah yang mengatur regulasi mengenai pemblokiran situs porno. Sebab, kebanyakan situs porno ini memakai hosting dari luar Indonesia. Sehingga, akan sulit dilacak dan dijerat dengan yurisdiksi Indonesia."Situs porno dengan admin orang kita sekitar lebih dari 1 juta alamat. Meskipun itu affiliasi dengan luar atau ada keterlibatan komunitas di luar negeri. Tapi, yang containnya Indonesia asli, bisa saya katakan banyak sekali. Dengan adanya UU ITE ini memang masih agak sulit menjeratnya sebab hostingnya pasti dari luar negeri. Ini jadi tantangan dari pemerintah. Apakah bisa mengetahui Internet Protocol (IP) dari seseorang? Kalau IP bisa diketahui, maka bisa dilacak," papar pemilik nama lengkap KRMT Roy Suryo Notodiprojo ini.

Secara internal, Roy tak yakin 100 persen masalah-masalah mengenai pengaksesan situs pornografi bisa diatasi dengan tuntas. Mengingat, jalur aksesnya bisa lewat mana saja. Jalur yang bisa dikontrol adalah jalur akses dalam negeri. Namun, penggunaan di warnet atau melalui jalur luar negeri seperti Hongkong dan Kanada akan sulit sekali dikontrol. Tak hanya itu kebanyakan juga menggunakan nama asing dan kartu kredit palsu (carding).

"Mungkin bisa dikenakan warnetnya nanti. Yang memang memberikan fasilitas untuk pornografi atau orang-orang men-download dan menyebarkannya lagi. Kalau men-download untuk kepentingan pribadi, ya itu hak pribadi setiap orang," lanjut dia.

Selain itu, mengenakan tindakan pidana bagi orang yang melanggar ketentuan di UU ITE mengenai informasi yang melanggar kesusilaan ternyata juga tak mudah. Aparat penegak hukum harus bisa benar-benar membuktikan bahwa yang menjalankan operasional situs porno itu adalah orang Indonesia.

"Situs-situs itu tidak bisa diakses totally, saya pikir juga tidak. Pasti masih ada serangan-serangan dan pencurian-pencurian. Tantangan itu sekarang sudah mulai muncul. Meski ada satu dua situs yang belum-belum sudah menyerah kalah, tidak membuka lagi. Tapi di milis-milis juga ada yang mengatakan bahwa mereka akan mencoba mendatangkan akses dari luar negeri. Jadi jalannya masih panjang," imbuh Roy lagi.

Solusinya, menurut dia, pemerintah harus menyediakan akses internet murah sehingga masyarakat Indonesia cenderung menggunakan jalur akses dalam negeri. Dengan begitu, pemerintah akan lebih mudah melakukan kontrol atas penyalahgunaan internet. Masyarakat juga harus diedukasi tentang pentingnya filter pornografi.

"Kita arahkan internet kembali ke kit'ahnya yang memberi manfaat. Sehingga orang tidak takut mengakses internet dengan adanya UU ITE. Walaupun, blogger atau hacker pasti masih akan tetap ada," pungkas dia.
